Why do old kungfu films have so many females as lead characters?

I was wondering about this. Why do the older kungfu movies from Shaw have mostly females as the main lead in their stories?|||It was a male dominated genre. So the ultimate underdog is a female. Suddenly she busts out better martial arts than 5 guys conbined, it was new, sexy and successful. Guys wanted to see it and it was different.
